Engineering Prank

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any pranks around the University. I think the last one was the huge ERTW in the EITC atrium. Well, Thursday morning, those that looked up at the CWB Grain Storage Research Centre had a little surprise. The Engineering Underground, an unknown group of students, made their point clear about the proposed tuition fee surcharge (see www.saveengineering.ca for the details).

Distance Close Up

“RAISE OUR FEES, WE WANT DEGREES”

It is interesting to note that the University administration seems to be quite slow at removing this prank. As of Friday evening, it was still in place. Maybe they don’t actually mind this one :-) .

Note: I was not involved in any way with this prank or any prank. I simply brought my camera Friday morning to take pictures after seeing it Thursday.

See RED, vote YES!

…and Save Engineering! That’s right, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba is running low on funds. In fact, they’ve been running a deficit for the past seven years. I’m not going to reiterate everything here, so I would suggest you go to our campaign website at www.saveengineering.ca to get informed.

Along the campaign trail, there has been some questionable messages from the No side. Evan Thompson does a good analysis in his post titled “What they say, what they mean, and why I’m better at math” on the Heck Yes! website.

And finally (before I get back to thesis writing…), check out our Get A Mac parody on YouTube or the SaveEngineering.ca website.

Things are heating up….

If you’ve read the Winnipeg Free Press lately or The Globe and Mail, you’d know that the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba is considering a tuition increase to offset its deficit and help it’s underfunded programs. While UMES Student Council prepares to put forward a referendum to engineering students, student politics on campus are heating up. I think Joey Coleman says it best. Read his blog post here. There will be more to come…

This year, The Great Engineering Pi-Throw has moved into the 21st century and now provides live statistics. Dario Schor (UMES Electronic Communications Directorship), is a wiz at online applications which has made this possible. Check out the UMES and Pi-Throw websites for the live stats, or the banner below. Better yet, add a banner to your website! Copy and paste the code below into your website and a banner like the one below will appear:
<script xsrc=”http://www.umes.mb.ca/pithrow/stats/?size=100″></script>

PS. Send lots of pies!
